Do you require a new fuse board?

If your fuse board unit is safe and it meets the current government regulations, then an upgrade would not be necessary. However, this is not always possible to determine without the assistance of a qualified and registered electrician to carry out an approved electrical inspection.

There are however some things that you can look for to determine whether you need an upgrade or not.

  • Your current unit does not come equipped with a Residual Current Device (RCD). This is a safety device fitted to units to ensure additional safety should a break occur in the circuit.
  • A consumer with a wooden backing or iron switches is installed. This is an old-style consumer unit which is no longer deemed as safe. It does not meet current guidelines and deemed a fire risk
  • There are exposed wires, circuit breakers or fuses present on your consumer unit. Additionally, missing blanking plates are also found on fuse boards. This is a significant health and safety hazard as live parts are no longer protected from touch.

What is involved in a new install?

There are two factors to consider during the upgrade or installation of a new fuse board. They are.

  1. Length of time
  2. Groundwork requirements
  3. Cost of the installation

If the consumer unit is installed near the electric meter, then there is no reason to cause much damage to the adjacent walls. Not take up too much time. However, if the consumer unit is installed far away from the electric meter, then additional time and groundwork will be required.

Newer fuse boards are generally bigger than older models and would cover any additional holes created during the installation.

Some installations also require upgraded meter tails and mains earth cable. These all add to the time it takes to complete the job. A good estimate would be a day to complete the upgrade.

The cost of upgrades varies between £300 to £600 depending on your requirements. It also depends on your existing electrical installation system.
